IPM Plan and
Training Video
PURPOSE
The purpose of this project is three-fold:
·1 Review existing museum Integrated Pest Management at
Grant-Kohrs & revise the IPM to reflect resulting recommendations.
·2 Establish the first Museum IPM Program for the
Powell County Museum and Arts Foundation
·3 Produce an educational video using these two sites
as a case studies in the principles and implementation of IPM for circulation
to regional museums.
BACKGROUND
GRKO is a 1,500 acre historic ranch with 89 historic
structures, several housing exhibits or historically furnished period
room. This site's existing Museum IPM
Action Plan, written by a museum conservator, will benefit from review by an
entomologist and expansion from just collections to other cultural
resources. The basics of IPM have been
studied and implemented. This plan will
address the more difficult challenges of mitigating the presence of dermestid
beetle larva around historic carpets, cluster flies by the thousands staining
historic wallpaper, an increase in the presence of case-making and webbing
moths, carpenter ants destroying the wall of an historic home from their
channeling, pigeons rousting on historic structures and vehicles, and skunks
burrowing through historic foundations.
Powell County Museum and Arts Foundation (MCMAF) is
a non-profit umbrella organization that oversees several museums including the
Old Territorial Prison, the Ford Auto Museum, the Frontier Museum, the Doll and
Toy Museum, and the Powell County Museum.
They have not yet taken an Integrated Pest Management approach in their
museum. Establishing the basics will be
a giant step forward for this organization.
The museum community across the states of Montana
and Wyoming do not have a museum IPM training video. By using these very different sites - one
with federal funding and professionally trained staff and the other a
non-profit with on-the-job training - museums at all levels can benefit
learning the processes used in developing these specific IPM Plans.
The on-site visit will be recorded through
video-taping and digital photography.
These formats will be cooperatively edited to produce educational
material for the museum audience.
TASKS:
Task One: The IPM specialist and video technician will first review introductory
information about GRKO and PCMAF mission, resources and draft Museum IPM
Plan.
Task Two: Conduct a three-day on-site visit to GRKO and PCMAF by the project
entomologist, videographer, and staff curators.
GRKO resource staff (resource manager, building preservationist,
facility manager) will attend appropriate portions of the GRKO visit. They will look first at known pest problems
and then evidence of additional pests, habitat, and exclusion. Housekeeping and pest monitoring practices
and schedules, as well as other management practices that might contribute to
the habitat of pests (e.g. how garbage and recyclables are handled) will be
reviewed.
Task Three: The entomologist will revise GRKO's IPM Plan, draft PCMAF's first
plan, and produce a list of action items including the responsible party and
cost estimate for both sites. If
applicable, a list of proposed control chemicals will be produced in
conjunction with NPS resource manager & include source and applicator
information. The 75% drafts will be
submitted to GRKO for comment. The final
plan, list of action items for both parks, and information on proposed chemical
source and cost if applicable, will be submitted to GRKO.
Task Four: The videograph will produce a color 15 to 30 minute digital video
program on the development of a Museum IPM Plan, with narration, music and
background sound where appropriate. Work will include travel to GRKO and PCMAF
in Deer Lodge, interviews with entomologists and curators, and footage of the
on-site visits & implementation of monitoring and control. Process will include development of a
treatment, script, review of script by NPS/MSU staff for approval. A review of draft video by NPS/MSU staff will
be submitted for comment and approval.
The final product will be submitted MSU and GRKO.
·
SCHEDULE
Task One: Completed within one month of the signed agreement.
Task Two: The on-site visit will be completed within one month of Task One.
Task Three: The 75% drafts will be
submitted to GRKO and PCMAF within 2 months of Task Two. GRKO and PCMAF will have 3 weeks to submit
review comments. The final plan, list of
action items for both parks, and information on proposed chemical source and
cost if applicable, will be submitted to the park within 6 weeks of the
comments.
Task Four: Development of a treatment, script, review of script by NPS/MSU staff
for approval within one month of the site visit. GRKO/MSU staff will have three weeks to
review. A review of draft video by
GRKO/MSU staff for approval will be submitted within six weeks of the submitted
comments. GRKO/MSU staff will submit comments within three weeks. The final product will be submitted within
one month of receiving draft comments.

OBJECTIVES:
GRKO IMP Plan:
·1 To go beyond basic Museum IPM review and
implementation to assess the more challenging/severe Museum IPM issues at the
site
·2 To revise the existing Museum IPM Plans and
procedures to reflect assessment
·3 To provide a prioritized list of action items
including who is responsible and estimated cost
PCMAF IMP Plan:
·1 To conduct an onsite assessment of Museum IPM issues
·
To provide a
plan basic plan that will help explain basic IPM principles and simple/routine
monitoring and control actions
Training Video:
·
Viewers will
understand the principles of Integrated Pest Management
·
Viewers will
understand how to write a basic Museum IPM Plan that includes monitoring and
control
·
Viewers will
understand how to implement an Museum IPM monitoring program
·
Viewers will
understand how to implement basic/lowcost Museum IPM control measures
AUDIENCE
GRKO IMP Plan:
professional cultural resource managers and their technicians.
PCMAP IMP Plan: museum staff with little professional training.
IMP Training Video: individuals with little or no museum
training. The vast majority of museums
in these Montana and Wyoming are small and managed by volunteers or small
staffs with little professional museum training. Larger regional museums can use the video to
help train volunteers and technicians.
